The Providence Journal, colloquially known as the ProJo, is a daily newspaper serving the metropolitan area of Providence, the largest newspaper in Rhode Island, US. The newspaper was first published in 1829.

As of March 2024, Rhode Island has two professional sports teams, the Providence Bruins, minor league affiliate of the Boston Bruins, as well as Rhode Island FC, who compete in the USL Championship, the second tier of American soccer.

The AMP PVD houses the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League and the Providence College men's basketball team, a charter member of the Division-I Big East Conference.

The Providence Journal (daily), founded in 1829, is the oldest continuously published major daily newspaper in the United States. Newport, Pawtucket, and Woonsocket have daily papers, and a number of other towns publish weekly newspapers.

Beacon Media RI, a locally owned company headquartered in Warwick, Rhode Island, publishes three weekly newspapers -- the Warwick Beacon, the Johnston Sun Rise and the Cranston Herald. The company also publishes a weekly shopping guide, The Reminder, which covers Coventry, West Warwick, and West Greenwich.

Soccer (53,368) is the second most popular sport, followed by track & field (52,164), basketball (45,836), and baseball (43,367). For girls, soccer remains the top sport with 45,544 participants.
